Intertox Selected as U.S. Delegate for ANSI Meeting in Germany
June 4-8, 2007



Dr. Richard C. Pleus, Intertox director and Technical Committee Member for ANSI TAG ISO, was selected as a U.S. Delegate to attend the ISO/TC 229 Plenary, being held this June in Berlin, Germany.

The ANSI-accredited U.S. TAG to ISO technical committee 229 on nanotechnologies formulates all U.S. positions and proposals with respect to a particular ISO committee’s activities. Formed in mid-2005 to progress standardization in the field of nanotechnology, specific tasks to be undertaken by ISO/TC 229 include developing standards for terminology and nomenclature; measurement and instrumentation, including specifications for reference materials; test methodologies; modelling and simulation; and science-based health, safety, and environmental practices.

Intertox Organizes Risk Assessment for Nanomaterials Workshop

Intertox managing scientist, Dr. Igor Linkov, is organzing a one-day event for the Cambridge Public Health Department called Risk Assessment for Nanomaterials: Current Developments and Trends. The full day continuing education course will cover a diverse range of topics essential for professionals in nanotechnology and biotechnology, with nationally recognized experts from industry, academia, and government leading each topic.

Intertox Invited to Speak at the 2007 NSTI Nanotech Conference

Intertox director and toxicologist Dr. Richard C. Pleus has been invited to speak at the 10th Annual NSTI Nanotechnology Conference, held this year at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. With over 3000 attendees and 250 exhibitors, the NSTI Nanotechnology Conference is one of the largest international nanotechnology conferences in the world. While no longer exclusively focusing on scientists and researchers alone, the conference now shares recent research and developments on nanotechnology. Dr. Pleus has been invited to speak at the Environmental, Health and Society: Standards and Testing forum, taking place on Monday, May 21st.

Intertox Presents at 2007 EWRI Conference, Tampa, FL

Intertox Senior Scientist, Dr. Erin Snyder, presented at this year's World Environmental and Water Resources Congress conference, held in Tampa, Florida. This year's focus was on Habitat Restoration, with a variety of technical tracks covering issues from around the globe. Dr. Snyder gave two presentations, the first titled Incidence and Toxicological Significance of Selected Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) in Drinking Water, the other titled Current Issues, Education and Outreach, both presented under the Endocrine Disruptor Chemicals In The Environment track of the conference.

Intertox Presents at ABA's Section of Litigation Annual Conference
April 13, 2007
Intertox director and lead toxicologist Richard C. Pleus, Ph.D., attended the American Bar Association's Section of Litigation Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas. The conference covered a variety of topics, but most notabley touched on the topic of Expert Witnesses. Dr. Pleus was a part of the Me and My Shadow: Communication Between Attorneys, Experts, and Graphic Artists presentation given to attendees, exploring numerous types of effective demonstratives and graphics that could be used in a trial to persuade a jury.

Dr. Pleus was later mentioned for his participation on the ABA Official Website, under 'Message from the Chairs', which examined the demonstration in detail, and explored the ways in which communication and graphic arts play an intertwining role in effective Expert Witness examination and jury involvement.


Intertox Publishes New Article on Mulitcriteria Decision Analysis

Dr. Igor Linkov, Intertox managing scientist, published the article Application of Multicriteria Decision Analysis Tools to Two Contaminated Sediment Case Studies, alongside Boris I Yatsalo,Gregory A Kiker, Jongbum Kim, Todd S Bridges, Thomas P Seager,Kevin Gardner,and F Kyle Satterstrom in the latest issue of Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management.
The article illustrates the application of 3 different [Multi Criteria Decision Analysis] MCDA methods in 2 case studies involving contaminated sediment management. These case studies are based on real sediment management problems experienced by the US Army Corps of Engineers and other stakeholders in New York/New Jersey Harbor, USA, and the Cocheco River Superfund Site in New Hampshire, USA.

Intertox Organizes Continuing Education Workshop on Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis

Intertox managing scientist Dr. Igor Linkov is currently organizing 2 continuing education workshops on the use of multi-criteria decision analysis for management of contaminated sediments at the Fourth International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments in Savannah, Georgia on January 22, 2007. Intertox Hires New Environmental Chemist
January 1st, 2007
Intertox started the new year with a bang by hiring Erin R. Bennett, Ph.D. as our newest environmental chemist. Dr. Bennett is based out of the Boston area, alongside current Intertox managing scientist, Dr. Igor Linkov. Dr. Bennett’s background includes Environmental Chemistry, Ecotoxicology, and Biology. He earned his Ph.D. in Natural Sciences from Landua University in Germany, and his Masters of Science in Environmental Chemistry from Tent University in Peterborough, Ontario. Dr. Bennett received his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Trent University, and earned a Technologist Diploma in Enivornmental Biology from Canadore College, out of North Bay.

We welcome Dr. Bennett to the Intertox team, and see his addition as a step in the positive direction, as this year is looking to be both proserpous, and exciting, with a variety of interesting projects on the horizon. Intertox Publishes New Book on Environmental Security

Dr. Igor Linkov, Intertox managing scientist, published the book Environmental Security in Harbors and Coastal Areas, for which he served as editor, alongside Gregory A. Kiker and Richard J. Wenning. The book explores the challenges facing coastal areas during the next few decades and the difficult decisions needed to prevent a repeat of the past. Intertox Presents Paper on Endocrine Disruptors at the WESTCAS Fall 2006 Conference

Dr. Richard C. Pleus, Intertox director and toxicologist, presented his paper Endocrine Disrupting Compounds/ Personal Care Products: Three Management Strategies – Advanced Treatment, Source Control and Risk Assessment/ Community Education, which he co-authored with Patrick Phillips of USGS, and Dave Gavlin, a representative of King County, Washington, at the Fall 2006 WESTCAS Conference. Intertox Published in Perchlorate Ecotoxicology

Intertox senior toxicologist Dr. Erin Snyder was published this month as co-author of articles cited in Perchlorate Ecotoxicology, through the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC). Dr. Snyder's contributed to two chapters, the first being "Perchlorate effects in fish"(p. 155-184) and the other titled "Perchlorate effects on invertebrates" (p. 185-209). Intertox director Dr. Richard C. Pleus attended the that annual Natural Gas Technologies 2006: Energy and The Environment conference, held in Orlando, FL. He was there to present his presentation entitled “Does Natural Gas Combustion Produce Nanoparticles?”. The conference focused on natural gas and energy industry leaders, technology solution providers, government officials, and policymakers in an exchange of information about the latest achievements in environmental technologies, services, and products including the most pressing environmental issues that impact the industry. Intertox Serves on Planning Committee for this year’s Naphthalene State of the Science Symposium (NS3)

MITlogo.gif Dr. Richard C. Pleus, Intertox director and toxicologist, attended the Naphthalene State of the Science Symposium (NS3) in Monterey, CA, serving as part of the planning committee. Sponsored by Regulatory Checkbook and the Center for Environmental Toxicology at the University of Nebraska, the symposium reviewed four fundamental science issues related to the quantification of human cancer risk from exposure to naphthalene at environmentally relevant levels from scientists and researchers from all around the country.
